Bodacious Book Review | The Food Babe Way

The first time I saw Vani Hari, aka — The Food Babe, she was talking to Marie Forleo about 5 Surprising Health Foods You Shouldn’t Eat.

At the time, I was deep into The Body Ecology Diet, and cracking open young green coconuts to make coconut water kefir and milk for my son.

We’d been on a healing journey to help him:

  1. regain speech (he almost completely lost speech at 18 months after a series of vaccinations)
  2. remove heavy metals and toxins — arsenic, copper, and mercury — from his body (these can cause behavioral, sensory, cognitive and neurological delays, gastrointestinal problems, and other chronic health conditions)
  3. and prevent and heal the effects of autism

I’m always seeking fresh, plant-based, allergen-free foods and delicious ways to prepare them.

My kitchen is now an active juice bar and real food cafe. Since we have other severe allergies to look out for, I have a daily need to keep toxins, allergens, and pesticides away.

Enter The Food Babe Way…

Her science-based information and investigations have helped me keep these poisons out of our food, which is great considering…

Team Lavish (my fabulous family of 5) has the following allergies:

  • gluten
  • wheat
  • casein
  • cow’s milk and goat’s milk
  • peanuts
  • tree nuts
  • rye
  • pear
  • cauliflower
  • pumpkin
  • white potatoes
  • fish

This has made meal planning a challenge, to put it mildly. We focus on what we can eat and have a few staples we love.

So you can imagine my surprise that many of the healthiest of healthy organic foods I buy — are riding dirty. Just like the other stuff.

I knew organic fruits and veggies still have pesticides on them (here’s a fruit and veggie wash recipe for that:), but my daiya cheese?

Makes me wanna cus.

But Seaweed Is Safe…

Have you ever heard of “carrageenan?” It is a seaweed derived additive that is considered safe.

Sounds safe right?

It is an inflammatory agent often used in organic foods that keeps liquid from separating. It’s found in desserts, toothpaste, yogurts, cheeses, deli meats, and ice cream. — The Food Babe Way

It has been known to cause gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer.

I’d rather not have that in my ice cream.

There are 14 other chemical’s you probably have no idea are hiding in your meals.

She calls these the Sickening 15.

Based on science, what they can do to your brain and body is enough to make your hair fall out, break off, and stop growing.

Seriously.

You don’t have to have allergies to enjoy this book.

If you just want to be healthier and look even more fabulous — THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

You don’t have to be vegan, go raw, eat paleo, or gluten-free to do it. The Food Babe Way meets you where you are and makes it easy.

One Tip At A Time

Vani gives one tip each day for 21-days to help you gently change what you eat and how you feel.

I’m on Day 9 and her energy and enthusiasm comes through each page. It’s like she’s cheering you on every day!

She also includes an eating plan and recipes you can start eating today. Her veggie lasagna recipe is worth the cost of the entire book!

Chia seed pudding is another favorite for us. I love it with mulberries and hemp seed milk!

The next time you hear a fast food chain or corporate food giant telling you EXACTLY what’s in their food, or how soon they’re taking the “beaver’s ass” out of your ice cream, send some love to @TheFoodBabe…she almost certainly had something to do with it.
