Flaxseed Leave-In Conditioner Recipe

November 16, 2012 by Erica King

3 tablespoons flaxseeds

2 cups purified water

sandalwood essential oil

spray bottle

strainer

*optional: fresh rosemary, thyme or basil; you can also add flaxseed oil, coconut oil, lemon oil or grapefruit oil to your mix depending on what your hair wants and needs:)

Add flaxseeds to purified or distilled water.  Bring to a boil.  Allow flaxseeds to boil for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes.  Don’t boil the flaxseeds too long (5 minutes) because it will make a gel.  Nothing is wrong with the gel - excellent for hair and scalp health and growth - but if the mix is too thick, it won’t spray and may start to look a bit goopy a week into use.

You want the water to be slick on your fingers so that you feel something but not too much.  I use this in place of water to spritz on our hair because water causes us all kinds of frizziness and hair blues. Lavish needs the hydration but plain water is too drying.

I added dried organic roses and apple mint ($2.49 at Home Depot) to this conditioner for more softening power!

If it looks too much like water to you it’s ok, the mix will thicken just a touch as it cools but not too much.  You can reuse the flaxseeds again to make a full flaxseed gel or to make more flaxseed conditioner.  Use this liquid in place of water for your homemade conditioners and see what you think!  This spritz will last for a few weeks if you keep it in the fridge.  If not, you can expect it to last about a week.

For added lavish-ness you can add oils (safflower or sunflower are my favorite because they’re light and add great shine), extracts, and other essentials.  Basil, Thyme, Rosemary, Cedarwood, and Lavender - when used together - have been found to grow hair back in individuals with alopecia.  When added to jojoba or grapseed oil and massaged into the scalp daily, 44% of participants with aloepeica areta experienced hair growth.  For my fellow science nerds you can view the abstract here.  The results found:

The results show aromatherapy to be a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata. Treatment with these essential oils was significantly more effective than treatment with the carrier oil alone. We also successfully applied an evidence-based method to an alternative therapy.
