I make all of our hair care goodies and splurge on the products Lavish really loves like Oyin Handmade, As I Am, and many, many others. With nut allergies (peanut and tree nut) and keeping our skin moisturized in the desert, buying products that made our hair and skin happy was a challenge. For all dermatologists out there - never tell a Naturalista to put her baby in a bleach bath…I mean - WTFudge!
Anyway, I wash and condition with clay and seal in the moisture with an organic oil or homemade organic oil mix. For twists and protective styles I use flaxseed gel and homemade hair butter to protect my ends. I buy locally and online. My favorite online stores are Organic Creations, Mountain Rose Herbs, The Sage, and Speciality Bottles to hold my Lavish Goodies. There are numerous online stores to shop from. I’ve heard great things about butters-n-bars. I’ve ordered from NaturallyCurly.com and of course Amazon. Play around and see what you find. If you find great sales and natural treasures - let a sistah know!

Hair Butters & Pomades
Sexy Chocolate Shiny Hair Butter
(If you’re not making your own hair butter…why not? It’s super simply easy, way less expensive, lasts longer, can be customized to your needs, and can be done in less than 10 minutes - max. The hardest part is finding all of the ingredients! Anywho, follow this simple recipe. Look at your favorite hair butters and see what the top 3 ingredients are in each. You’ll probably find that the same oils, essentials, and butters are in each. Pick your favorite 1 or 2 and experiment! This is a great first recipe to start with. I keep adding to it depending on what our hair needs for the week or month.
I’ve expanded on this recipe adding just about any hair butter I have in the house at any given time. Here lately I’ve added mango butter and shea butter to my mix - more for the body butter effect, but LAVISH LOVES IT! I thought she and shea didn’t get along - long story about product buildup insert here - but I used it this week and…well…they’ll be a recipe update soon:)
Oyin Handmade was the first place I found products that were a magical experience for my hair. Natural Anniversary : February 16, 2013 - 4 Years
Lavish loves to be left alone so I wash her monthly when I can or once ever 2 to 3 weeks. I use a clay wash, let it sit on my hair for about 45 minutes and typically follow it with a rhassoul clay conditioner for another 30 to 45 minutes. All detangling is done in the shower and takes less than 15 minutes. It takes me longer to wash the clay out than it does to detangle! This is also true with my kids hair (one 7y/o the other 5 y/o). We each have different textures of hair and the clays work well for each of us!
